Mold Damage And Your Home

The flooding rains of the past few months have finally stopped in our county. Many residents finally have the chance to go out, climb on the roof, and check for damage. In most cases, a ‘soft’ spot on the roof does not mean much to the average homeowners; they may not even see or feel it as they walk around. It is what might be underneath that is the concern.

Even a small, ‘soft’ spot in the roof can mean a large source of moisture for mold damage in a Highland Park home. With decades of experience in mold remediation, SERVPRO has developed a set of procedures that stops mold growth and allows us to clean and remove mold spores safely.

Our first procedure is to set up containment. Response team members hang thick, plastic sheets over doorways, windows, and other openings around the affected area. They serve as an effective barrier against contamination spreading to unaffected parts of the home. At the same time, other technicians seal the HVAC vents to prevent duct contamination and accidentally spreading mold spores to the entire house in less than a minute. They also set up negative air machines to direct contaminated air outside of the structure.

Next, comes physical removal. Structural materials like drywall and ceiling tiles are cheaper to dispose of and replace rather than attempting clean them or cut away affected sections. Carpets are particularly challenging to clean mold from and the labor hours involved restoring them exceed the value of simply replacing it. Technicians use specially designed HEPA filters and commercial vacuums to remove mold fragments from the surfaces of furniture, walls, and floors.

After the vacuuming, the response team allows disturbed dust and spores to settle and then begins wiping down surfaces. Dry or wet, they accomplish all surface wiping in the direction of the negative air machines to speed up removing them from your home. Finally, we dry the affected area to prevent new growth. We use a combination of dehumidifiers and room heaters to raise the temperature and lower the humidity.

SERVPRO of Eagle Rock / South Glendale understands that mold can be just as damaging to a home as a flood or even a house fire. Removing mold is not a simple process, but we are here to explain and walk through every step with you. Call us today at (818) 244-6005.
